Garden Retreats

A garden retreat for time to yourself

Leave your book open. Keep a favourite chair by the window. A garden retreat gives you somewhere to spend an hour without finding a space in the middle of a busy home.

We build made-to-measure rooms in our Shropshire workshop. You choose how you want to use yours, and we help you plan the size and layout around it.

Planning your room

Begin with the way you like to switch off

A reading room needs a comfortable seat, good light and somewhere for books. A space for yoga needs a clear floor and room to move. If you enjoy both, sketch each arrangement before deciding on the building size.

You do not have to give the room every possible job. Keeping its main purpose clear makes it easier to choose what belongs in it and what can stay in the house.

If making things is your way to relax, our Garden Studios page covers the practical decisions for a creative workspace.

Choosing your range

Choose the building around your routine

For a retreat you want to use regularly, start with an insulated range. These two options give you different starting specifications while allowing you to choose your dimensions and available finishes.

Garden Rooms

Garden Rooms include PIR insulation, electrics and laminate flooring. Heating is optional, as are foundation supply and installation. This range is a starting point for a reading room, a quiet sitting room or an open space for a gentle exercise routine.

Signature Garden Rooms

Signature includes a metal SIP structure, electrics, laminate flooring and foundation supply and installation. We agree the layout and available finishes around your brief. Choose this range if you want those elements of the building project brought together in the starting package.

Put the view where you will enjoy it

Picture the room from your seat, rather than only from the lawn. A window facing a favourite part of the garden can make a small room feel closely connected to it.

Also consider what is visible from the house and neighbouring gardens. Door and window positions can help balance your outlook with the privacy you want. Leave enough uninterrupted wall space for shelving or a piece of furniture that matters to you.

Walk to the proposed position at the time of day you expect to use the room. Notice the light and think about whether you would want shading where you plan to sit.

Leave space to move between activities

If the room will be used for yoga, plan the clear floor area with the mat laid out. Include room to stretch and a place to put the mat away afterwards.

For reading, check the chair's full size, including any recliner movement. A small table within reach and a light in the right place may do more for the room than extra furniture.

The route from the door should remain easy to use. Draw the furniture into the plan before deciding on external dimensions.

Plan comfort for the hours you spend there

Both recommended ranges include insulation, with heating and air conditioning available as options. Discuss when you will use the room and how much glazing you want, so comfort is considered as part of the design.

Share your lighting preferences too. A reading lamp beside a chair needs a suitable socket position, while a room used for relaxation may call for a different arrangement from an office.

Electrics are included in Garden Rooms and Signature, with the agreed package set out in your quotation.

Connection of the garden room to the main property electrical supply is not included unless expressly stated within the quotation. This work can be quoted separately if required, subject to a site survey and the requirements of our electrical contractor.

A separate room does not mean complete silence

Tell us about nearby noise if quiet is central to your brief. The position of the room and its openings deserve attention alongside the building specification.

Acoustic panelling is optional on Garden Rooms and Signature, but it is not a promise that outside noise will disappear. Discuss any particular sound requirement before the design is finalised.

Common questions

Garden retreat questions

Does a retreat need to be a large room?

No. Start with the activity and furniture you want to fit, then allow for comfortable movement. We make our buildings to measure, so the size can be considered around your available space.

Can I use the retreat in winter?

Choose an insulated range and discuss suitable heating for your intended use. Garden Rooms and Signature include insulation; heating is optional. We do not promise a particular indoor temperature from insulation alone.

Can the room be used for work as well?

Yes, a desk can be included in your furniture plan. Consider whether work equipment will be in view when you want to relax. For a room used mainly for work, see Garden Office.

Does the quote include the furniture?

Treat chairs, shelving and other furniture as separate items unless expressly included in your quotation. Their dimensions are still useful when planning the building.

Is the electricity connection from the house included?

Only where your quotation expressly includes it. It can be quoted separately if required, subject to a site survey and our electrical contractor's requirements.
